Welcome to my website! I’m Joseph Holtzman, a Maine-based potter and recent graduate from the Maine College of Art and Design (MECA) as of 2023. I create my work out of the community studio Running With Scissors here in Portland.
You can find my pieces at various local venues. I regularly sell my work in person at Portland's First Fridays and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market, as well as other markets throughout the year. Additionally, some of my ceramics are available at the CIA Cafe in South Portland and ME Sew Crafty’s shop right on Congress st, where you can see and purchase them directly.
This website serves primarily as a gallery showcasing my diverse range of pottery. It’s also a platform for reaching out to me directly. Feel free to explore my work and reach out if you have any questions or want to talk about getting a unique, handmade ceramic piece designed just for you.
In my ceramics practice, I find inspiration in the fusion of form and function, creating pieces that are both utilitarian and aesthetically compelling. While my earlier explorations were rooted in abstract sculptural forms, my current focus lies in crafting functional pieces that bring more attention and joy to the small daily rituals. From handcrafted cups and mugs to traditional shaped vases and nesting bowl sets, each piece is a testament to my commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. I take pride in infusing my work with playful elements, such as my expressive claymen, that add a touch of personality to everyday objects. Central to my practice is the development of my own unique glaze recipes. Vibrant and eye-catching, yet entirely functional, these glazes enhance the tactile experience of my pottery. Whether it's a miniature thrown piece or a tiny teapot with a handmade texture, I strive to create pieces that not only delight the senses but also elevate the ordinary moments of life. In the studio, I meticulously craft each piece with attention to detail, ensuring a sturdy construction and a seamless blend of form and function. As I experiment with firing techniques, from mid-range to high fire reduction, I embrace the unpredictable nature of the kiln, each firing ensuring a unique piece of pottery. Ultimately, my ceramics serve as a bridge between tradition and innovation, inviting viewers to engage with the beauty, functionality and joy that went into my handmade pottery.
